Knowing your numbers


(1) Digit: To represent any number in mathemetics, we use ten symbols 0,1,2,3,4,5,6, 7,8,9. These ten symbols are called digits.

(2) Numeral: A group of digits denoting a number is called a numeral.
Following are examples of Numerals-
a. 59
b. 111
c. 1,007




(3) Natural numbers - These are all the numbers from 1 onwards {1,2,3,4.....}. Natural Numbers are also called as counting numbers.

(4) Whole numbers - These are all the numbers from 0 onwards {0,1,2,3,4....}. So whole numbers include all natural numbers and zero

(5) The smallest natural number is 1 and smallest whole number is O.

(6) The successor of a whole number is 1 more than the whole number. For example, successor of 3 is 4. (3+1). Similarly, successor of 12 is 13 (12+1)

(7) The predecessor of a whole number is 1 less than the whole number. For example, predecessor of 7 is 6 (7-1). Similarly, predecessor of 19 is 18 (19-1).

(8) 1 does not have any predecessor in natural numbers because it is the first natural number. Similarly, zero does not have any predecessor in whole numbers as zero is the first whole number




(9) There are two systems of numeration:
(i) Indian system of numeration
(ii) International system of numeration

(10) The period in the Indian system of numeration are hundreds, thousands, crores and arab.

(11) The period of the International system of numeration are hundreds, thousands, millions, billions and trillions.




Q1 Fill in the blanks:

= 10 x ten lakh

(d) 10
Explaination-
1 crore
= 10000000
= 10 x 100000
= 10 x million

(e) 10
Explaination-
1 million
= 1000000
= 10 x 100000
= 10 x one lakh
